The North London Cardiac Centre is run by a team of consultants specialising in different aspects of coronary heart disease.

Dr Roby Rakhit

Roby RakhitDr Roby Rakhit is a Consultant Cardiologist at Royal Free Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College London (UCL). He qualified in 1991 from Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School, University of London, with a first class honours degree in pharmacology. He undertook his general cardiology training at the Hammersmith, Royal Brompton and St. Mary’s hospitals. In 1998, he received funding from the Wellcome Trust to complete his doctorate (MD thesis) at the Rayne Institute, St.Thomas’ Hospital on the cellular physiology of nitric oxide in conferring myocardial protection against ischaemia. In 2000 he was awarded a prestigious British Heart Foundation International Fellowship for further advanced interventional training at the Swiss Cardiovascular Centre, Bern under the supervision of Prof. Bernhard Meier.

Dr Rakhit was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Free Hospital in 2004. He is currently the Head of Department of Cardiology and Clinical Director and has contributed significantly to service improvement. Dr Rakhit was elected to fellow of the Royal College of physicians in 2008.
Dr Rakhit has special interests in interventional cardiology including coronary angioplasty and stenting via the radial artery approach (wrist). He is also skilled in the implantation of permanent pacemakers. His main interest is in the treatment of acute coronary syndrome (heart attack) and was instrumental in setting up the Royal Free Heart Attack Centre which provides a 24/7 immediate coronary angioplasty for the treatment of acute heart attack. The service was runner up in the BMJ Group National awards 2010 secondary care team of the year. His research interests are:

  • the relationship between heart disease and stroke
  • coronary artery disease and, specifically, the role of inflammation and damage to small blood vessels (microvasculature) during heart attack)
  • the psychology of heart disease especially the relationship between emotional stress, behaviour and recovery from heart disease.

Dr Rakhit is responsible for the training of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors specialising in cardiology. He is a recipient of the “Top Teacher Award” in recognition of his contribution to undergraduate teaching at UCL. He lectures widely to medical students, general practitioners, physicians and cardiologists in training. He is the Programme Director for training of cardiology registrars (fellows) at the Royal Free Hospital

Dr David Brull Consultant Cardiologist

Dr Brull is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist whose practice involves all aspects of cardiovascular medicine. He qualified in 1992 from the Royal Free Hospital Medical School. During specialist training he completed a period in clinical research for which he was awarded his MD thesis.

In October 2003 he was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at the Whittington Hospital and The Heart Hospital, University College Hospitals London. He became Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians in 2007.

Dr Brull is Cardiology Clinical Lead at Whittington Hospital and was appointed as Clinical Director for Chronic Conditions in 2012.

Clinical interests

Dr Brull has broad experience in managing patients with all common cardiac conditions including angina, hypertension, heart failure, referrals for investigation of palpitations and collapse, cardiovascular risk assessment, perioperative cardiac assessment and treatment of elevated cholesterol levels.

Dr Brull’s main interest and specialist training is in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). He helped set up the Heart Attack Service (Primary PCI Service) at The Heart Hospital UCLH and has performed more than 1200 percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs, angioplasty and stenting procedures) since being appointed.
